Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of Bezos' move, the WashPo was a liberal paper and its readers identified as such. It's always a bold move to sack your readers. Ordinarily I'd assume Bezos worked off the data but this feels different

WaPo isn't a money making venture for Bezos, it's a hobby. The billionaire equivalent of running a lemonade stand. It has far more value to him as a way to gain political favor that effects Amazon and AWS than getting money from the paper.
He can afford to close what amounts to a liberal left wing mouthpiece - pennies to him relatively speaking. Not so much of a sacrifice to shut off a channel critical of him and his kind.
Similarly to Musk with Twitter, economic sense or success doesn’t seem to factor in their decision making. He could run it into the ground and it wouldn’t make a difference for him
Maybe he sees it as becoming the FOX of print
Everyone else at least pretended to be "neutral", FOX swung for the fences with pro trump/hate and their viewers needed a place to go for that
Only they did
Now WaPo can fill that in print
Even sweeter that you think an oligarch doesn’t genuinely believe 1. free markets are amazing 2. free markets are under promoted in the market place of ideas.
They don’t believe in your fantasy version of “free markets” but the term definitely has a meaning in the context Bezos uses it and that meaning is closer to reality (low or no taxes, no regulations, no employment laws) than anything you’ve ever said it means.
Another reminder that these multi-billionaires are really not very bright. A gentle hand on the tiller, an occasional alternative viewpoint and he's influencing the left elite. Alienate all of your readers and he's shouting in a vacuum.

The overlap between pro-Trump supporters and people willing to pay for a WaPo subscription is very slim.
