I’m from Holland and always very proud of our cycling infrastructure.

I just came back from a rail trip to Paris & Lyon. Very impressive what they’ve managed to build recently. Also, very clean air by banning most ice.

Now, I’m a bit disappointed in our environment…

Yeah France is really good with its 300km/h+ trains.
Re: environment: Air quality & noise, mostly. But also general public space design, car-centricity, driver aggression, distracted drivers etc.

Paris had the same problems but is now quiet, clean air, calm traffic, better bike lanes than NL. I’d always assumed this was very local/spotty (but easy to frame in a media photo-op) like you see in developing countries.

Dang I really want to do a European bike + train adventure! That is a great report. I am becoming a strong advocate for significant roadway changes in our area, and it will be helpful to know how successful this has been in other places, thanks for sharing.
