very much agree, though we have just had a very recent scandal in the uk (in my hometown) where it turned out a funeral home was lying about 30+ cremations, giving out fake ashes while keeping the bodies for years these cases are the horrid horrid exception that generates a rule in people’s heads - ThreadSky

why did they do it?

money saving is the belief. if you don’t send the body off for cremation, you don’t have to pay the council to do a cremation. so you get to pocket extra. keeping some of the bodies to hand is cheaper. maybe they were going to have them cremated when they had more money: unclear

the understanding I have is that they were able to self justify bcos they basically believe anyone outside their specific Christian sect is a sinner and completely unworthy of respect, so from their view there’s nothing wrong with disrespecting the dead like that

very very very very very unlikely that the case there has occurred elsewhere in the uk (there’s a lot of Specifics about the people behind it), but people see stories like that or the old tri-state scandal and end up getting very paranoid something like that’s gonna happen to them

also just strange stuff like handing over ashes in Tupperware allegedly, someone’s mum’s ashes turned up in a brown paper bag. understanding via family members who’d dealt with them before was they had Strange religious views about the importance of respect for people outside their specific religion

I remember growing up there was a local scandal where a funeral home had been burying the bodies in shallow graves around the facility rather than cremating.
It was big enough to get it's own Wikipedia article.
