very much agree, though we have just had a very recent scandal in the uk (in my hometown) where it turned out a funeral home was lying about 30+ cremations, giving out fake ashes while keeping the bodies for years

money saving is the belief. if you don’t send the body off for cremation, you don’t have to pay the council to do a cremation. so you get to pocket extra. keeping some of the bodies to hand is cheaper. maybe they were going to have them cremated when they had more money: unclear
also yeah you're entirely right that one bad incident gets everyone paranoid that it's happening everywhere.
