I have encountered plagiarism more than I would have liked to. Most of the time, the text just stood out as being in a different style and a quick search on the internet would come up with the original source.

I reported these cases of plagiarism to the editorial boards of the journals, and each time the following happened. "Yes, the plagiarism is undeniable, let me ask my superiors what I am supposed to do about this."

Then I would get the answer, "It was deemed not sufficiently important to warrant an action". "Not sufficient" means paragraphs of text copied from another paper that the authors were not even a part of.

So why wouldn't the journal act when plagiarism is reported? My only guess is that it costs time and money to rectify the problem. And the whole purpose of most journals is to make money, even when they are run by big nonprofit professional societies.

Plagiarism will likely become increasing important over time given that #AIGenerated text is being used more frequently and given that AI-tools are being built into word processors. If nothing is done, plagiarism will become even more normalized than it already is.

We are creating a new journal and we are about to write our own policies regarding plagiarism. I will advocate for a zero-tolerance policy:

Plagiarism will need to be corrected when it is found, and if it is not, the article will be retracted. No exceptions.

Does anyone know of any other journals that have a truly zero-tolerance policy towards plagiarism? I'd like to see how they handle this!
