I remember being told about Fredy Hirsch by my grandad’s friend Vera, who knew him in Theresienstadt. Fredy Hirsch left Germany in November 1935. In exile, he met his partner Jan Mautner in Brno in 1936. The couple lived together and it was no secret that they were gay. Mautner's mum cooked for them. 1/2

Mautner, who was four years older and studied medicine, was also deported in July 1942. He survived Theresienstadt ghetto, #Auschwitz and #Schwarzheide as well as the death march back to Theresienstadt. He died in Prague in 1951 of tuberculosis, which he had contracted in the concentration camp. 2/2

He could have left the children, he could have saved his life, but he went with them to the end. He didn't leave them. One of the many great stories of the Shoah.
