I recall reading that a large majority of SS guards died peacefully in their beds in West Germany and Austria in the 1980s and 1990s. One researcher who interviewed many said he didn't hear any express the slightest remorse over what they did.

Deported with her mother Esther (1899). Her father Joel (1885) had already been deported a week earlier, on 19 July 1942. Her brother Raphaël (1917) survived.

In March 1942, Raphaël made the decision to flee to Switzerland with his pregnant wife. Sadly, Esther refused to go with him, as she did not want to leave behind her husband, who had already been arrested at the time.

2/n A convoy is scheduled to leave the Beaune-la-Rolande camp on August 7. As the RSHA had still not authorized the deportation of children under the age of sixteen, the children were separated from their parents before the convoy left, resulting in heartbreaking scenes.
