I've been told flu vaccine makers try to predict the three most likely 'worst' incoming types and protect against those.

Did they predict the wrong type this year?

Because I got vaccinated, yet something viral hit me like a truck about 3 weeks later .. and it's still hitting me 2 months on ..

Interesting to see that while other respiratory diseases seem to follow the classical seasonal pattern, covid looks more constant across the year with only minimal peaks. Any thoughts on this @chrischirp.bsky.social

Evidently so, but given that it's predominantly spread by airborne means (isnt it?) I'd have expected it to behave like other respiratory infections?

My understanding is that Covid mutates very rapidly & can generate variants that can evade previous immunity from infection or vaccine at any time. So infection rates are driven by new such variants appearing + time spent in poorly ventilated crowded places as is more common in Winter.

Thanks for the insight. Yes, rapid mutation does make some sense but I'm still surprised there doesn't seem to be a dignificant seasonal effect.

Glad helpful! The extent & pace of mutation really does seem to be the most important factor where it concerns Covid. It's very clearly shown in wastewater data for Scotland (others don't collect it). It showed the highest rate in July last year since Omicron's first year in 2022

Do we have any analysis as to why this is such a big flu wave? Low vax take up? Vax that doesn’t address current flu variant? Failure of hospitals to test properly, consistently for different types of respiratory illness and just calling them all flu? Would be very helpful to understand this.

Multiplex rapid tests have not been rolled out in the NHS & it is unlikely most people will get a PCR. I believe they are reliant on symptoms for most & it is too similar to Covid.

We test very few & are reliant on hospital labs now. Multiplex tests have not been rolled out in the NHS & it is only very recent that tests for not a notifiable disease, flu, have started in 'some' NHS hospitals.
UKHSA are limited to a small sample size.
