My understanding was Cromwell’s head hung above Westminster Hall until it blew down in a storm in the 1680s, though this might also be an old wives tale. But the post-mortem dismemberment also has implications for Cromwell’s afterlife — body cannot be reformed at the Last Judgement. [just tuned in!]

There’s also a bonkers 1650s anti-Cromwellian royalist play pamphlet that presents Cromwell as being a weak leader who hasn’t really gone off to commit ethnic cleansing in Ireland but instead is hiding in Wales in a ruse to scare Londoners into submission.
