since drafting this article a couple weeks ago i've had a lot of valuable conversations with friends about the difference (outlined by @megueyb.bsky.social ) between "no one gets hurt" culture and "no one gets left behind" culture. i want to try synthesizing these thoughts at some point!

I like that distinction a lot both for safety tools and for design experiences. Because this is my lens I think of it applied to the things I like about OSR combat/violence vs 5E combat/violence (I'm casting my OSR approach as 'no one gets left behind' and 5E as 'no one gets hurt' here).

Palette Grid gave us more space to discuss content that might feel uncomfortable but provides an "other world" experience that players want. It offers more flexible tools for safety tools (I also prefer the term "calibration tool" as mentioned by diceexploder in an article, taken from Nordic larp).

Ive been thinking about something like the pallette grid for a while now.
back in the day when safety tools weren't normalized, I remember being so pleased with lines & veils. But Its been like 4 yrs since that roll20 article, and I use an updated version similar to the pallete for the same reasons
