My resolutions are getting more abstract but one very tangible goal is to stop interacting with people on here who don’t use alt text. It is so easy and makes the world more accessible and it’s not fair to people with limited vision to be left out of jokes or memes or conversations.

I try to use alt text. I'm not perfect but I do my best. I know that Bluesky has the reminder for alt text but for whatever reason that actually makes me just delete the post even if I'm doing alt text. Like it stresses me out. But I actually really like adding extra context in alt text.

One thing I heard that helps me sometimes: Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.

My posts won't win any awards and my alt text is just a basic description of what I attached the graphic to show.

If you're too stressed out to do something, just do what you can.

Oh for sure. I will do basic descriptions too. It's the reminder to do alt text that stresses me out. Like anticipating feeling like the app will scold me. Knowing the reminder is on is a barrier for me posting anything, even when there's no pictures. Doing alt text isn't the stressor.

I had never thought to use alt text anywhere else before, but within my first week on Bluesky I saw someone point out that you can change your settings to require it, and I did. Such a nice feature, makes things more accessible and only requires a few seconds of effort

Any estimate how close we are to usable automated alt-text generators? I think one of the gif companies ran their content through one of them, and they're not too bad imo. (happy feet dancing scene as example)

It’s an accessibility and semantics tool. Notice how sometimes pictures on here might have text descript? That’s alt text.

It’s very important for people using screen readers, people who may be some kinds of vision-impaired. May be useful to non-native speakers, etc.

It is so easy to set a reminder in the settings so you don't post a meme without adding alt text! And some people go all in and write alt text that is much funnier than the meme they are posting or much more interesting than the picture they are posting. Alt text is a win-win for everyone!
