It's kind of an American thing, not that cars don't kill people elsewhere, but America has very high rates of deaths from cars. Think about it like maternal mortality or anything else we are ahem exceptional in.

A weird thing I learned writing a creative project is that if a ghost zone mirroring Earth and populated by the dead existed, every major US city would have a ghost zone location called the Highway Holocaust where staggering numbers of car accident ghosts congregate.
