I just finished “The Battle Cry of Freedom” and it was insane the amount of concessions we were willing to give the southern states! And none of it mattered! They still whined endlessly and seceded!

If you read the daily newspaper coverage of the runup to Lincoln's election in 1860 it reads EXACTLY like the runup to Obama's election in 2008. Exact same arguments.

If it weren't for changes in the syntax of newspaper writing, you could play a "guess which era" game and everybody'd score 50%.

I wish Lincoln’s Cooper Union address were as well-read as his more famous speeches (unfortunately, it rambles on a lot before it gets to the point). He’s saying exactly this: we’ve compromised with the slave owners and they just get angrier and want more.

At least they originally were splitting the Party, which is what they need to do now. They need to have someone separate out and reignite the Constitutional Union Party. The Tea Party hot mess got us where we.are because we didn't hold Rep accountable then. It's gotten worse. They need to revert.
