This isn't a fault of the education system at all. Schools can only do so much and parents need to work with them as well to help teach things such as Internet safety. But way too many of them have decided that parenting is too hard and let their ipad entertain their children.

Even if they have a computer the kid's not allowed on it cause they could break things (despite non-admin user accounts being a thing)

I got my mom's old system when i was like 7, figured out how to emulate pokemon crystal on that thing within 2 days.

Well, you see, this is the thing: most people think that education is just the system of schools, teachers, staff, etc. but the phenomenon is wider: it involves parents, media, culture, legislation, economics, labour, market, the state of tech, science and their outreach.

All that is failing.

Three decades ago education professionals started to recognize that digital literacy was growing important. But the teaching programs were often budget mammoths; the reach was uneven.

Those partially computer literate children grew and now can't (or won't) effectively teach their kids PC skills.

Computer literacy suffers quick obsolescence too, but some people believe the pace to be faster than it truly is, making intergenerational transfer of knowledge harder.

The false belief that somehow babies now are born "with the chip" and naturally tech-wizards gives bad expectations too.

But worst thing is what you pointed out: parents disengagement from an educative process that should had been collaborative.

It was really over when parents could start suing schools for merely interfering with children upbringing and started to act oppositional to lots of literacy efforts.
