My quick list of how to suspect / detect AI:

-Fabricated quotes
-Vocabulary beyond students' grasp
-Complex sentence structures
-Words spelled differently than in readings (*esp useful for non-Western topics)
-Vagueness
-No grammar errors
-Lack of citations
-Same structure as other students' papers

All right on. To add: an obsession with subheadings, which often contain only two or three paragraphs of identical length. Perfect citational formatting, with DOI, including a variety of web sources all mysteriously accessed on the same day.

No citations and terms/spellings I didn't use in class are a big flag for me. Stri dharma? Upaya? I don't get into those things in an intro class, so if they're in a paper it's either AI or copied from wiki :(

It really depends on what material you’re teaching. AI is very weak in areas where the internet is weak (like in-depth global fashion history). I also scaffold assignments so it’d be difficult and likely take longer to get AI to do it; I also verify learning with quizzes so the incentive is low.
