Yeah, it's a shame, I really like High Elves and themed my LRL force after them but I felt I needed to do sneaky elfy things to hang with other armies that made people feel bad. My opponent having a good time is also really important to me, so it's a real shame.

The Light of Eltharion is what got me to buy AoS, and the fact I cannot turn up at the store with my LRL without someone making a comment about them puts me off. (Not my opponents, randos.)

That model is so cool. Having played both I think 40k has much more egregious rules but concepts like NPE aren't usually bandied around as much.

I have the makings of 4 40K armies, I haven’t rolled a dice for it since 5E (and then not for 3E or 4E). The scene always feels too competitive for it, I just don’t care about that type of play anymore. *sigh*

Yeah I wouldn't say people not talking about NPE is b/c the game is better, but because it's more competitively minded and people kind of expect it... There's always narrative play I suppose!
