Stabi on Potsdamerplatz in Berlin: the last modernist giant, falling apart, roof leaking, the Fighting Temeraire of libraries, a 1970s time machine which gave me my PhD and most of my publications, a magical place, a testament of an epoch when libraries were ships moored in the centers of our cities
