This thread, and let me add: if you are vulnerable and also have the money when you get a passport… apply for a passport card as well. It’s much easier to carry with you all the time, and it allows you to leave your passport in a secure location while still having documentation.

It's also useful overseas as ID (sometimes required of all travelers or all adults), because it's machine-readable under UN standards (most driver's licenses aren't).
