Not sure where you’re getting your information from but the U.S. definitely has interbank transfers! Not everyone uses them, which is sad, but they are widely available.

They are not interoperable with all banks, and/or fees are charged, and they don't function the way they should.

For instance, there is no way for me, a private individual, to set up a paycheck direct deposit without giving someone information that could be used to clean out my account.

In just about the rest of the world, you can give people a code that can only be used to pay, and not withdraw. You can give this code to anyone and it doesn't matter if it ends up on the dark web because the only thing you can do with the code is pay someone.

With Zelle, I'm limited in how much I send, and who I send it to; not all banks are part of the Zelle network. It's not an actual solution. It's a stopgap measure.
