I feel like people really struggle with the idea that Musk etc are both evil, and definitely aware of the evil they’re trying to do, but also completely incompetent and thick as two short planks. Better for many I think to believe they’re either silly and unaware, or genius Machiavellians.

This is my big complaint against the anti-fascist propaganda that appeared during WW2 and that started to re-appear once people realized that American Fascism was the now a thing.

Portraying Hitler as an evil mastermind was a good way to sell war bonds, but not great otherwise.

It probably feels better to seem outmatched and outwitted by a genius than to know you are going to be under the boot heel of idiots. Also gives you cover to not do anything and pretend it’s all inevitable.
