The bill allows for several different ways to prove citizenship. But most importantly, it requires state leaders to establish protocols to allow citizens to register even if there are discrepancies in documents, such as name changes.

It says that states should establish a process so that people who have “discrepancies” can present documentation about that.

It says nothing about whether a name change is the kind of “discrepancy” the state has to address, and more importantly, it says nothing about what kind of process.

I don’t like the premise of the SAVE Act for a lot of reasons—this idea that there are a large number of noncitizens voting has basically no evidentiary proof behind it, and this is going to disenfranchise a lot of people for basically no benefit.

Nevermind the trans folks who’ve changed their names and/or gender markers, only to now be facing having their passports or government-issued IDs confiscated by the very same governments, unless they willingly deadname or misgender themselves simply to have the required ID to register to vote.

I beg my reps to understand that every law they pass will be read and used in the most aggressive way possible to get the result the reader wants. Not reasonable-- possible. And what a bunch of those readers want is for certain people to not exist, let alone be able to do things like vote.

Well the authors of the bill see this is as a benefit. The goal is to return the US to only white male property owning voters.
