If you pick up the market leading product, and it's a colossal pain in the ass to figure out, you will reasonably conclude "all such products are like this" and the idea of trying an alternative is going to seem like ANOTHER huge pain in the ass.

It definitely wasn't on purpose at first. But I wonder how much of it is them bowing to the will of the very vocal minority who wail if things are changed and how much is this.
I'm not entirely certain who this is subskeeting, but in case my intuition roll succeeded- I've been picking up non-market leading products essentially out of spite and have been finding them elegant, engaging, and (with the exception of Call of Cthulhu) far, far simpler.
There are lots of games I can put in front of new people and, in 3 hours, have a full story played out. (Except that, unless it’s a con, I tend to pace things out a bit more than that)
His experience was only with bigger RPGs, the 200+ pages kind. Can’t really fault him for not realizing how little is needed to have a fun role playing experience
