Plenty of sequels work. Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2, Two Towers. It's often the third one where it all goes to shit

Yep T2 is superior to the original Terminator. Some say Aliens is better than Alien, but I think they're both equally excellent.

We've mentioned some that work but I think, as a general proposition, most sequels are less than the originals. And, as you say, by the third one...forget it.
