As an orchestra musician, I dearly love Beethoven's symphonies. But to be honest, the string quartets and piano sonatas is where you find Beethoven's boldest and most innovative music.

The Danish dudes do it best. My favorite piece by Beethoven though has to be Sonata 14 third movement Presto Agitato. I played that until my fingers bled trying to get it perfect.

Just ordered, along with the Emerson recording; perfect timing for a birthday present for my dad! I'm partial to Op. 130; the alla tedesca, cavatina, and Grosse Fuge in (technically) one work is absurd.

I've always been a bit overwhelmed and tired by the Grosse Fuge.
In comparision, Op. 131 sounds calm, sunny and relaxing. That's the best combo for myself (at least): to start with Grosse and end on 131 : )
