There are two states that not only don't disenfranchise felons, they can vote from prison. (It's not exactly common, for a number of reasons.)

I didn't mean it was impossible, just that it's hard to get politicians to do something because it's right when they know it will hurt them electorally. VA has had govs who made rights restoration as automatic as possible, but eliminating it would require legislation.

Setting aside the morality of the issue (which I 100% do *not* recommend), having a large pool of workers who are compelled to work for nothing or virtually nothing puts tremendous negative pressure on the labor market. How do you compete against people who don't have to spend money on labor?

California easily passed all of its bills…except the ones that will pay or house poor people and workers. Those all failed (or are tightly contested).

Meanwhile, we keep the felony to cheap labor pipeline open via increased penalties and the maintaining of forced work assignments.

The way it was worded on my ballot didn't mention slavery. It might(?) have abolished slavery if it was worded like it was in the image. I had to read it a few times to make sure I voted to end involuntary servitude.
