Last summer I got really really into chess for like 3 months and got okay at it and then lost interest and promptly forgot everything about how to play... and idk what it is but something is driving me to get back into it

Yeah chess is one of those things that I keep coming back to before deciding I donβt really want to get into it, over and over. Even as a spectator Iβll kind of drift in and out.
But there are other board and card games that are less of a commitment that can still scratch whatever that itch is.
This is me with the game Go every few years. I just can't get good at it so I get frustrated and stop playing and then a few years later im like huh I should try Go again.
You do realise you can play online against kids, and lose. I did that for a while and it put me off chess. Maybe try something physical like running or cycling.
I run a chess club in the school where I work. I win almost every game I play there. My oldest opponent is 10. Donβt seem to have the same skill level at homeβ¦
Learnt the game in school as a child and have been addicted intermittently since, despite never being very good (top score on https://chess.com was something like 700)
It can be so frustrating but also beautiful and rewarding. Everybody should learn.
It's such a fascinating game, and a rich history that I love to dive into.
One of my favorite pictures comes from when Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand were playing in the 1995 PCA World Chess Championship in the World Trade Center, and they went to the roof.
I never played chess until I befriended a flight attendant who told me riddles the whole flight and told me to download the chess app. Then for the next 6 months he beat the shit out of me until I beat him and then he blocked me π
I don't know you but this has happened to me continuously for 20 years. It's like athlete's foot. You think it's gone but one day a terrible urge to scratch reveals that it never really went away
Chess became an unexpected hyper-fixation of mine during pandemic lockdowns and I managed to go from a rating of 700 to ~1250 on https://chess.com but I've pretty much plateaued there since
I did this a few times and each time I forget. I do have a VERY old chess book for children though as a result, so I guess there's that. One day, I WILL win the Dexter's Lab Gameboy Advance chess game.
If only chess was like riding a bike
Maybe what you find fun is that initial process when we get really invested in something and greedily enjoy our own growth, until we hit either a wall or the natural slowing of our progress and we start learning something else like little dopamine junkies.
Youβve got it, Iβd say itβs like riding a bike you never forget but Iβm not sure Iβm still trying to master checkers Iβll make the step up to chess someday π
I have the same thing happen with video games, except about 10% of the time, when I pick something back up I'm somehow BETTER at it than I was before. Just happened to me with Fortnite recently! I used to consider 3 kills a good match, now I'm disappointed if I get less than 5!
I got really into it in February this year. Watched guides, learned a bunch of openings, made progress. Then I made the mistake of only playing 1-minute bullet matches and, while fun, feel like Iβve made no progress for the last three months.

now when i play people i tell them what opening they did (they don't know what opening they did) and i get to lose in 10 moves π

Or maybe thatβs just me.
It has now been 3 days since he has responded to my chess knowledge and inquiries.
