Does the black fur not denote that the wolf has interbred with a dog and therefore we are just in the picture allowing for a new wild dog breed to exist?
The cross breeding was a long time ago which resulted in the melanistic colour variant. Looks like the speculation that the color was a result of crossbreeding started around 1944 and was later confirmed by genetic studies.
