A ceasefire was declared by the ruling military junta from April 2-22 (now extended to April 30) after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the country on March 28. More than 3,000 people died in the earthquake. Aid groups report that over 17 million are in need of food, water, shelter and healthcare.

One of the attacks happened just hours after the earthquake, anti-junta armed group TNLA claimed that the military bombed Nawng Len village, approximately 120km from the earthquake’s epicentre in the eastern Shan State. Seven members of a TNLA-aligned ethnic armed organisation were killed.

The airstrikes happened in territories held by rebel forces, civilian areas and in towns and villages the ruling junta is fighting to retain control. On April 9, 20 people were reportedly killed in an airstrike in Nan Khan in Sagaing’s Wuntho Township.

On April 19, the junta dropped a bomb during an airstrike on the village of Yae Htwet in Thabeikkyin Township which killed at least 27 people, according to the BBC. Just a day earlier, 13 people were reportedly killed in an attack on Leik Kya village, located 3km north of Yae Htwet.

There’s also been reports of villages being burned down, like the village of Ngar Shan in Chaung-U Township. We weren’t able to geolocate specific images, but thermal hotspots were detected at the site on March 31 lining up with reports of 170 houses being burned on April 1 local time.
