For student organizers, the looming repression from the Trump administration that threatens anyone in support of Palestinian liberation, trans rights, immigration, and more is nothing new.
Students have been experiencing months of crackdowns by their university administrations targeting their right to protest and to free speech. And despite the crackdowns, they are not backing down.
Students are navigating repression by remaining nimble as circumstances require, investing in collective safety practices, and keeping their focus on collective liberation.
Amidst new and emerging obstacles to their organizing, such as constantly shifting restrictions on public space, students are able to quickly adjust their tactics, teaching us the importance of remaining creative and flexible amidst changes designed to confuse us.
Students have also developed substantial protest safety infrastructure, with marshals and legal observers a regular feature of student protests. Now is the time for our movements to strengthen our collective safety practices as we face heightened risk from the Trump administration.
The student movement is not separate from other fights for justice. As Trump's Executive Order that threatens to deport international students who speak out for Palestine reveals, the struggle for migrant justice is intertwined with the movement for a free Palestine, and with all other movements.
