College campuses across the country have become centers of protest, demanding the end of the ongoing genocide in Palestine, along with material commitments from their administrations in their divestment from the Israeli occupation.
Since the first student encampment was erected at Columbia last year, over 100 campuses followed suit, and administrations have been quick to punish students.
From disciplinary hearings, suspensions and expulsions, to inviting police onto campus, the actions taken against anti-war students have been severe, with long-term consequences and for many with the addition of charges from local police departments.
With Trump now in office, there has been an upswell of Executive Orders specifically targeting students. This month, Trump issued Columbia University a list of ultimatums that, if not met, would have resulted in pulling millions in federal funding.
36 new campus security officers who have the ability to arrest students will be hired, and the department of Middle East, South Asian, and African Studies will lose its independence and be put under control of an outside administrator.
