I have three bankers boxes of materials, plus a stack of documents that's about 6 to 12 inches high. About 1/3 of that is WIP. As for books...maybe one or two shelves worth?

I've gained the spare room to use as a craft/sewing/office space and in the middle of trying to get organised (which will include new stationery 😊💖) but don't want to overdo or skimp on the amount of storage I set aside for my family tree documents and files. Any thoughts/photos greatly appreciated

Are we also talking about the photo albums, VHS videos and Super8 cine film I have inherited in the last few years? #GenHour #GenHour #genealogy Apart from that my physical files are in binders -about a tall bookcase of those - my books I am not counting but again a largish bookcase with overflow

2/ The books were acquired as part of my pro genie life hence not counting those My digitised #photos now all need to be redone with better software and resolution and I am thankful that I still have the originals as some of my digital folders have apparently not backed up -lost when my laptop died

I always worry about the tech - would be dreadful to lose valuable photos - I think that's why I'm keen to keep physical records too. It all starts to add up to more space though doesn't it!!

We have now lost all but one of my parents' generation and because of my family history interest I was able to get the photos etc from my in-laws but storing them just as I am beginning to think about downsizing is a bit of an issue and will continue to be as parents live into their 90s #genealogy

I have an IKEA kallax bookshelf just 1 x 4 - it’s got random photos waiting to be scanned on 3 shelves & a handful of family books on the bottom. I’m very digital, certificates etc all scanned

I know we've spoken about your digital filing before Jen and I'm in awe 🙂 I try to be digital but guess I'm just old fashioned at heart and like an 'original' somewhere! I've got a couple of Kallax units and a bookcase available so thinking 1 shelf of the bookcase would work for genealogy matters...

Physical storage of actual #FamilyHistory materials? Three box files. These hold the paper records and photos I’ve been given. Everything else is digital. My book collection, on the other hand, is expanding rapidly. 😂

Those box files look lovely 🙂 I have my family, my husband's and ex-husband's and had thought about a box file for the mat/pat line in each but that would make 6 and probably be overkill - so I may stick to one per branch especially as most details will be digital anyway

Broadly this cabinet. Half the boxes on top are "to sort/scan" and add to the drawers which are about 1/3rd full (one for Mum's ancestors, one for Dad's ancestors, one for my immediate family including anything for both Mum & Dad). Plus a 1 metre long bookshelf. #AncestryHour

🙂 thanks - I like the little case/satchel on top of the cabinet. It's helpful to get a visual idea of the spaces people use.
I'm still wondering whether to keep all my family history magazines or if I should just cull articles from them to keep in a binder.... 🤔

Thanks. That was my maternal uncles, and so perhaps unsurpisingly holds all the stuff from my Mum's side that I need to sort out! The cabinet had been left behind somewhere and the drawers are a pretty useful size. They don't fit A4, but do fit anything smaller than that. 1/2

If I was really forced to, I'd probably be able to get most of my non-negotiable books (from both the cupboard and my shelf) into the cupboard itself. I do have a seperate pile of magazines but will likely hand those on. I've scanned the really really crucial articles. 2/2

Actually scanning is a better idea and then passing the magazines on 🙂
I love that it was your uncles and now holds items from that side of the family - very apt
