If you’re teaching someone an rpg and hand them a book and say, “Read this.” Well….that’s 1 reason they’re not picking it up

Yes. They can generally get that from paying attention at the table, though. I’ve taught some complex systems this way and no one had to spend their evenings pouring over the text.
This LARP also had like 35 people. It was utter chaos.
