They've been spending $100bn+ per annum on AI, and truly self driving cars are still nowhere to be seen.
Let's call Artificial Intelligence for what it is: computer generated answers. Doesn't sound that awesome, I don't think.
The absence of self driving cars has more to do with legality than technology. Indeed, much of it comes down to the fact that rather than simply remedying the situation, the first thing that is done after an accident is decide who is at fault. And that's really tough with automation.
If that was true, we would have seen SDCs on private property, demonstrating what the rest of us were missing out on. At uni, 30ya, I fed pics into a computer and was amazed it ignored everything but the white lines on the road. 30ya.
Like... There's a fleet of self driving taxis. Isn't there? It's not like this technology isn't being used. It's just limited use right now, and most of that has to do with perception and legality.
Basically the tendency to rely on blame, and lawsuits is holding back self driving cars from reaching mass adoption. Couple that with the same kind of pseudoscientific tech opposition that we see from those opposing mRNA tech, etc., and it's on surprise.
I have been smugly saying this for a loong time. Plus openai never proved gpt was anywhere near replacing a software engineer. It was always only good at slop and at best ok for quickening queries for boilerplate code.
Old gpu models. The valuation required every tech company to purchase the latest and greatest gpus at immense scale. If they don't need nearly as many top end models at that scale, the valuation is going to crash.
yeah I got caught up now on the article. it's deffo gonna have an impact for sure. Good to finally have some evidence that there's plenty of room for optimization in model size and architecture. and maybe this will save a few million gallons of drinking water too
ah ok yeah I caught up to that but I'm the article. yeah that's reasonable, tech companies keep in laying off skilled researchers for marketing dickheads so this comes at no surprise tbh.
This is only the start. This is absolutely nothing. Only thing that sucks is daddy Trump in the house and will prob bail them out…. All those gov contracts still haven’t really come in yet
Black hole pockets of our new tech oligarch overlords. What do they care what happens with their products now. They got paid already… almost like it was such a hurry to get that $500 billion out like this bad news was around the corner… oh wait
This is good for me in two ways, the price of the Jetson Nano will plummet, and nvidia new graphics cards might come down in price, I might just be able to get a 5090 without selling an arm.

I mean we do, to an extent. However people aren't going to spend $20K+ on a self driving car that they can only use legally off road.
Chapter 7, preferably.
