When I researched pix of Baillie-Stewart for my book, the saddest pic from the Daily Sketch snappers was a shot of his parents sitting sheepishly in a lounge taken after he was charged with spying for Germany. They were destroyed. Pretty sad considering he loved all the attention and notoriety. 1/
I was amazed to learn he was probably the original "Lord Haw-Haw" but his bitter rivalry with the better known William Joyce saw the latter come out on top and be forever associated with the infamous monicker. Baillie-Stewart evaded the hangman's noose. What a bastard.
Yes, he had a German girlfriend/wife and went to Berlin via Austria. It amazes me how the stuck to the letter of the law and didn't just hang him anyway. The other thing was his glamour with women going to the Tower to get a view of him. Should be a movie/tv drama really.
He got seven years for sending the Independent tank plans to the Nazis and fled to Austria when he was released. He did more time in chokey after the war. He was actually the last British person to be imprisoned in the Tower of London where he was held on remand ahead of his spying trial.

There was a quote from some disgruntled soul who suggested driving him down the road & turning him over to the Soviets.
