Engagement with Russia prior to the invasion would have helped. An in person summit with Biden and Putin to discuss security guarantees for Russia and autonomy for Ukraine. I truly feel like this terrible war could have been prevented. It has been awful for Ukraine and Russia and their people.

There was plenty of engagements but Russia's demands were unacceptable and it is likely they had made up their mind already at that point. Russia doesn't really have legitimate security concerns re:NATO anyway, it's a sham talking point.

When the USSR broke apart, the former soviet republics were granted a kind of independence. But historically and traditionally, Ukraine and its cities have been closely tied to Russia. Thus it could be viewed as akin to a civil war. Brother against Brother. Tragic. Hopefully it ends soon.

Watching the process unfold, it seems Biden and the West gave Putin the middle finger rather than truly engage. I feel the tragedy could have been prevented. As many diplomats warned, pushing NATO east helped cause the war and NATO does threaten Russia’s traditional sphere of influence.

It follows that nobody gave the middle finger to anything other than entirely unreasonable demands. There were endless attempts to convince Russia that it wasn't in their interests to launch a full scale invasion and the west was already far too understanding towards Russia's earlier incursions

I don't care about "traditional spheres of influence", they don't justify anything and there's no "tradition" here. All the independent countries that have joined NATO by their own choice did so purely because they accurately assessed that there was a threat of Russian aggression towards them.

Fine, if partial report; it passes over everything the Biden administration did to strengthen America’s alliances in Asia, for example, and that was a lot. But it illustrates well how Blinken was constrained by Biden’s choices. Traveling to Israel every month leaves a lot less time for diplomacy.
