I used to swim across Coolangatta bay in Qland Australia and large pods of dolphins would swim past me on all sides. They were herding fish and after their big feed they'd all wander off to hang out or play in the surf. There was one break they liked because there were NO humans.
I basically ignored them as did all the surfers and everyone else. No "dolphin tours" or anyone seeking them out. We were in THEIR environment. All the active interactions were on their part. There were also lot of whales in the bay.
Snapper Rocks is nearby which is a busy world class surf break.
As a native Tennesseean, I'd never seen anything like it before or since. It was AMAZING. And they're so strong but gentle. A couple came so close to actually touching me, but rolled away at the last moment. I swear they were playing with me!
Saw this kind of thing on a daily basis when I was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, whenever we were deployed. It never lost its thrill either!
