Andrew Abram’s book might be more what you’re looking for.
My very amateur understanding of dragoon development (so far) is that even by the American Civil War they couldn’t agree on what cavalry (and dragoons) were intended for! 🤣🙈 and how they should be employed. But that’s probably a whole separate debate.
