ICE has arrested Iranian national Alireza Doroudi, a doctoral candidate studying mechanical engineering at the University of Alabama. He was arrested at home at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Not a reporter or in politics (law instead). My theories: bias against “elites” at prestigious schools; disdain for certain types of protestors; lack of funding for/access to, good legal representation; scare tactic.

Rubio has a “delete Student Visa” button or something he says he uses over 300 times a day. My inference from that is the buttons to delete Work Visas is in the pipeline but that might get the business people yelling vs University’s that have just rolled over completely to the admin.

Unfortunately, easy pickings for these arseholes. Students are good people and show up to class on time. They also are mostly studying in their apartments. They don't have to chase them, they're literally "right there". Only the scummiest of scumbags are doing this.

I believe large donors who run major hedge funds who are Israeli, were very outspoken about these protests and told these universities they'd stop donating unless they curtailed the protests, even got Univ Presidents fired. Now they use influence with the orange guy for retribution, perhaps?

I am not an expert but part of this I believe is due to students being very easy to find. People that have documentation with the government are a lot easier to locate than someone that is intentionally keeping their information from the government

There’s very little due-process required to cancel student visas.

Usually they’d get a letter stating that they have 30 days to leave the country. But now we’re getting Fascism theater instead.

It's always students leading protests. Make students afraid to protest and you have less protests, which makes your fascism easier to implement. And it doesn't hurt that they would rather not have the brown people here anyway.

Fascism has to move slowly at first.

You target trans people
in sports, then DEI programs, you remove women and minorities from places of power, attack higher ed, then go after the vulnerable.

Immigrants, students, dissenters.

If no one stops you, eventually, you're at the end of the poem...
