I've been out of govt a while, but I believe that even for those relatively new to govt there are termination rules about agency needs and performance. Ask your union for more info. Be sure and keep your performance reviews.

Also important to emphasize probationary =/= at-will. Still requires written statement of deficiency in either performance or conduct. Very likely *anyone* mass fired has a cause of action.

This might go without saying, but if you’re one of the 30% of federal employees in a union, talk to your union. Most potent source of job protections could be your collective bargaining agreement, and you should check there first.
