I know from experience, SSa and really any GSA leases are long term 10,15 and 20 years. The impact on building owners will be massive. But I also don't recall ever negotiating a leave with a quick no notice termination. They'll most likely continue to pay rent until something is negotiated

This is very common touch point for the fed govt for people, up there with the IRS and parks (as in dealing directly with personnel). People commonly lose their cards or need a death benefit or a million things that require making an appt and going over.

It's possible some of these are pre-inauguration. There's a long term crisis of understaffing across the whole agency. But a day one goal of DOGE was to cancel leases on many SOCSEC offices. In many case still without telling the people who work in those offices.

And, yes, you can’t kill a lease unless you have that specific right in your lease.

Generally, rents go up over time.

Most leases say tenants can assign or transfer to a new tenant, as an exit strategy.

So it’s often more “efficient” to assign a lease (and keep the rent profit) than terminate.
