8/ not what the law says etc. Obviously these latter points are hypothetical. The point is they've already axed most or all of the people who are going to say, no, stop, you can't do that. So the law remains the law. But inside the IRS we're pretty much in choose your own adventure mode.

One other thing about the IRS is they can make you provide lots of other personal info to defend your tax positions (e.g., leasing a home office to your business; health info to deduct a hot tub; living situation with family and dependents) that don't have other administrative process protections.

What's happening at the EES Administration and the access to FTI program?

Many states rely upon that data to cross-reference against folks who didn't file a state return in order to determine who may have not paid taxes.

So I wouldn't be surprised this will cause a shortfall in state budgets too

I don't know anything other than what the program does:

It provides large entities with Federal Tax Information.

Fwiw we know that tax info was illegally shared via wrongful disclosure to DOGE (Elez, Krause, etc.) at Treasury/BFS. We just don't know the full extent of how it was/will be used, especially for adverse determinations, criminal/immigration purposes, etc.
