Actually planning on making a trip out there. Not flying of course. I was looking at southern Oregon, love the outdoors and that area looks like it would give great access to the other areas we would like to explore. - ThreadSky

Southern OR is lovely. I particular like Ashland and Umpqua Valley. Keep in mind that it’s a VERY red area. And the farther you go south, the redder it gets. But if you can move past that, it’s lovely.

Me ? Honey I would never do that. 😉
But I will look farther north for the sanity.
Any recommendations? Good schools and good access for camping.

Eugene and Corvallis are great towns. And then the northern beach towns, along the gorge like Hood River. Central Oregon is pretty awesome too…though getting expensive! Really anywhere you go has great options for adventure and camping!

Oh man!!!! Hood River!!!! That entire Columbia drive is so spiritual. Celilo Falls!!! I haven't made it east of Portland in almost 7 years and I am planning a trip this July. I just hope my tears of joy and homesickness don't obstruct my driving abilities. Haha. This state is MAGICAL.

I do that drive a lot, as my folks live in Eastern WA and aunt lives in The Dalles. I love love love that drive. So pretty. And well, the wine tasting there is pretty nice too. ;-)

Yeah that sounds awesome. We take 3-4 week trips across the country now that we are retired. We stop and spend time in certain areas and then keep going.

And why not take the entire coastal (101) drive? You can't do oregon without Gold Beach to Astoria. (Bandon/ Coos Bay/Charleston beaches are superb). The state is your oyster! No matter what you do or where you go, you'll be sold. And our maga is somewhat stable, and waking up.

Where are you coming in from? If you can get to Joseph/Hells Canyon area, you'll see what the state is really made of. Mountains, valleys, glacier lakes and prairies. Hells canyon/snake river is the deepest (vs widest) canyon in us but it doesn't have nearly the tourism the grand canyon gets.

From Chicago. We can live anywhere, wife and I are retired. We have traveled all over the country except the PNW. I think we are just getting tired of the deep freeze every year. We looked in the southwest but really not desert fans. We love mountains and forests.

Oh then you'll def want to stay southern!!!! That northeastern part of the state does that solid deep freeze in winter. But if you're driving and coming in from Idaho (i84) get off in LaGrande, go east to Wallowa Lake, then head back to 84 across the state and head south/explore.

Thanks. Sounds like a good plan. Thinking an August trip this year would be nice. Take the northern route from Chicago and stop in the Black Hills. We love visiting there.

It’s beautiful and peaceful. Definitely give it about 3-5
days when you visit. Make sure you get to Custer State Park. It’s majestic. Take the horse trail ride. Buffalo, mountain goats and watch out for the bears and cougars.
