media companies simply love to pay out millions to random podcast hosts while constantly laying off the writers, editors, and media workers of every other stripe who create all the actual value

Because media companies don't think that people read anymore. Funny thing is I rarest listen to podcasts because I don't have the time to give them the attention they deserve, but I'll read what those podcasters write.
They need to look at why people don’t read. I understand they need ad revenue to support written work. But some of the websites are unusable due to the ads. I couldn’t even get hurricane updates on the local news website.
You're talking about for-profit entities. And they're seeing that more than half of American adults get their news from social media. In my area, even the local NBC affiliate was still pretty reliable, but in recent months, they've started looking very 'instagrammy'. Very sad.
imagine making 20 MILLION DOLLARS to host a podcast. I reckon I’m doing pretty well as a freelance journalist and if I hit $50k this year I’m gonna do a goddamn cartwheel
"democracy dies in darkness! also youve reached the limit of free articles you can read. pay us a sub fee we will not pass on to our writers and editors"
you mean written media, right? I see where you're coming from. But we have multimedia. We can't delegimatize a social transformation in format of expression. Was the marketing world terrible while dealing with this? Yes it was, but now different formats have an audience. Unfortunately, misinformed.

I'm sure those podcasters have to follow a very narrow script of messaging for w/e these companies want to say.
Narrative is everything to them, of course.

Low effort entertainment.
I still probably wouldn’t, but I don’t even have to contemplate merit in this scenario.
