I take medication every day that I need to live. I take that medication because of a different procedure, also necessary to continue to live. In our society, that medical care, expensive as it is, is still seen as perfectly valid.

You would have to be a real freak to insist that I should've died rather than go through with it or continue to take my medication. When I hear trans people speak about their medication and their procedures, they echo much of what I feel about my own care. That it is necessary for them to live.
Yet, somehow, it's an abomination for them to seek this care. I cannot see a reason why that should be the case. I have another person's heart beating inside me, hardly something I would consider "natural." In fact, I take medication specifically to STOP and override my body's natural response.
I made the decision to get my transplant when I was 15, a minor. It was a dangerous procedure with many potential complications (as are all medical interventions). I had other options that were less risky but would have lowered my quality of life. My parents let me choose. I could have chosen death.
I chose what I did because I thought it was best, and I don't regret that. Why is it that a trans child, let alone a trans adult, is not permitted this same faith? This same autonomy? Why are they seen as deviant, pursuing unnatural solutions to what is perceived by a cis society as a slight issue?
I am not trans; I don't really know what it's like to be trans, but I can't help but be so genuinely confused at how similar our situations are in regards to seeking care, yet how differently we are regarded by society.
I'm in the same situation, and I agree. The fact is that trans people (who are medically transitioning) need to take medication; while it may not be medically necessary, it is most definitely psychologically necessary. When I got my heart, I was told that the idea was for me to live a normal life.
Similarly, the idea for trans people is that they should be able to live normal fulfilling lives. And even if they're not medically transitioning, they should be able to do so. Hell, everyone should be able to do that, and the fact that they aren't is a major issue with the world today.
