He has incredible touch. His finger picking is extremely expressive - he brings out notes like a concert pianist does to reveal something more about the structure of what he is playing
I think he’s using double drop D tuning (both E strings tuned to D) and his guitar sounds like it has a piezo pickup. Very exaggerated highs whatever it is. An old Ovation might got close. Cool clip!
It's affect pedals for reverb and stuff, which is totally fine, but it's just not a mystery and it's certainly not some ungodly skill that makes it sound like that. He's still a very masterful guitar player obviously but the specific sound of the guitar is bc of an effect pedal or two.
We forget that these were not garage bands like the myth of that time. These were extraordinarily talented musicians working in their genre. I just recently found out a young Leon Russell was in the Wrecking Crew.
That’s why electronic sounds will never capture the awe of true mastery of an art or a craft. From who built the guitar to who plays it every vibration just a little different each sound unique doesn’t need to be covered up by shaking rumps or scantily clad women bc it’s real talent.
I'd like to hear it on a standard acoustic. The high note there in the main riff sounds so out of place for the guitar compared to the rest.
Another cool sound I like a lot is these electric guitars w/ nylon strings Ibanez made for them. Ibanez had one model a long time ago but nobody bought it:

It could also be a modeler/preamp. Fishman has a floor unit like that for instance.
I think Buckingham is amazing, but "La Petite Fille de la Mer" is at least as good as anything Lindsey has ever done.
It's the talent, not the instrument.
