ngl it is kind of fucking with me that so many people find themselves genuinely lost at the concept that your timeline is made by who you decide to follow and only who you follow and therefore have full control over what you put on it

I remember the day when twitter decided to stop showing tweets in chronological order and force people's +Likes onto your feed and I'm STILL annoyed by it handful of years later and you're telling me people genuinely don't know how to curate their internet experience since then, my god
Yeah it’s really crazy because Twitter’s for you page has been a mess and one of my biggest gripes, even the following is riddled with ads I have to keep blocking. Here I’ve curated several personal feeds based on content i’m genuinely interested in and it’s been a breath of fresh air.
You're not wrong, but a lot of this is on how far companies have pushed algorithms while keeping it opaque. If you're very online you know what happened to Twitter (et al) but the average user doesn't necessarily. It's now pleasantly surprising to find anywhere with a chronological timeline.
what's fucking with me is that the algorithmic timeline was *famously* unpopular on twt. hated, even. for years people spat in its direction and tweets reminding people to switch to "latest tweets" timeline instead of "home" went mega-viral. but 2 years of musk and ppl worship the algorithm now???
It's wild, they really don't. Between this migration and folks I see constantly saying sites like AO3 should have a for you rec page, I feel like we really have gotten lost
I recently watched a short video series about a DJ choosing to use an offline iPod for 30 days this summer who realized in the process how accustomed he'd gotten to relying on spotify's recs and how it changed how he looks for new music. I think it applies to most things online nowadaystbh
I have a collection of MP3s amassed over two decades on an set of external hard drives and some of my songs are completely unavailable otherwise on the modern internet.
It's frankly getting me worried for future generations. We live in an era that is pushing for anti-intellectualism because that benefits capitalism & authoritarianism which goes hand in hand.
Many kids who are born in this era won't know how to do simple researches because of algorithm poisonning
And yet I always find myself in conflict because ultimately I’m a needless contrarian, and even through my own subconscious my feed is catered through conflict.
And if you THAT desperately wanna see certain pushed posts from nonfollows, there's feeds for that! love that function with my whole heart. My fave is discover art that pushes artposts with 20 likes or less. Great way to find hidden gems
Algorithm poisoning--it's like the kids who go on ao3 thinking they have to post based off an algorithm, when it's an archive with no algorithm at all and functions purely on its tagging system. But try to explain that and they look at you like you're speaking another language
Man... I was desperate for twitter to go back to the chrono, follows only, no likes plain ole TL. I don't use Insta because it's like 75% shit I don't care about and doesn't even show me people I actually follow.
Perplexed that anyone would find that confusing. Also What's Hot is still around : /

No, I don't want For You. I followed these people for a reason.
I still refuse to use spotify and insist on owning all my songs as mp3s come hell or high water

And these people are in their 20s
Good lord I feel old and tired
