look I read Harry Potter as a kid, I enjoyed them fine, but even at 12yo I was like "I don't get what the big deal is, why these books? What about these ones that make people go crazy?"
Because, like, I actually read books without being forced to and Harry Potter was very average and derivative
When people say "read another book" it really is literal, because the only conclusion I could come to as ehe years went on is if Harry Potter was your young adult fantasy Bible you literally never read any other book that existed before or since
My only excuse was that as an abused kid, it gave me hope that there would be something better? I remember reading the last book at 15 when I was figuring out I was queer and realizing I didn't exist in this world and just...lost it then. And that was way before she took the mask off.
There was a story you drew years ago that a friend came across. He says he can't remember the name, but he will always remember seeing the art you drew for that short story, and that that was the only story about magical school he knew with a trans character.
