Also, hot take: Canadian resistance to being subsumed by the US is actually pretty simple. Canadians have universal healthcare, gun control, and parental leave. They don’t want to join us because they’re not insane.

Additional hot take: being American but having lived in Toronto for seven years, I feel confident in saying that if we offered every Canadian a free and easy US green card, 60% would take it.
Why?
1. The weather
2. High cost of housing in CA
3. High taxes
4. Low dollar
5. Frustrating healthcare
Sure, being a Canadian on a green card is a great scenario: all the opportunities that come with living in the US, but you always, always have a way out. It’s very different from the experience of most of my American friends, who don’t have another country to which they can legally flee.
Wanting to move to the US doesn't equal wanting to be American... Everyone wants to move to New York or LA. Ask them if they're willing to move to Raleigh, Houston, Philadelphia, Tampa, Milwaukee, St Louis... You'll get another answer
Maybe for Canadians born in Canada to Canadian parents, but I get the sense that for a lot of Canadians who initially came as immigrants, which is many, Canada was their second choice, and they’d jump at the chance to move to the US.
And with a Greencard, they could move anywhere in the US.
Toronto is also a very specific subset of Canadians who choose to live in a very large city very close to the US. Of course, it's pretty easy to sell people on a free and easy option for anything, but I'm not sure Toronto can be extended to apply to the other 30 million of us.
You forgot the following :
- Cheap education
- 18/19+ drinking laws
- Cheap electricity (in Quebec, at least)
- 9,35$/day daycare system (in Quebec, at least)
From what I have read, the incoming group of chucklefucks is actively campaigning against provisions of universal healthcare (dental and other non-core services) and advocating for moving those to a private model.
Not to mention legal abortion. And for those who support ‘life’ - please acknowledge that an ectopic pregnancy in Texas could amount to a death sentence.
Those are three nice treasures. 🇨🇦 I try to make some, um, maybe ungrateful fellow Canadians aware of this daily. Most I know are as appreciative as I am. Thanks for this post. ❤️
If the US enters a Constitutional crisis, then the union dissolves, and Trump is no longer President, and the Federal government is meaningless. The state of Michigan could be a mighty fine 11th Province. Okay, territory if you must! :)

I personally would love to give all Canadians the option to get easy US Green cards. Love me some Canadians.

But we're also just as proud to be who we are as Americans are proud to be American.

The enshitification of Canada has begun .
