Yes. I understand. It’s just hard for me to get behind life changing and often times permanent treatment for a child. I could totally understand feeling this way but just like most other adult decisions you must be an adult to make them. Idc about adults deciding to get treatment but children?
i don't think that most of us who do support transition related care for minors would want the minor to be able to make any permanent change without lots of therapy and the consent of the parents. just mainly want to buy the kid time to figure it out and get them in therapy. at least that's my view
Thats a thoughtful and understandable opinion. Before this conversation I was DEFINITELY on the “on a whim, when my son identifies as a woman we will get her surgery and hormone treatments” thought process. Your stance and explanation has definitely changed that.
i think a bunch of incendiary articles online make it seem like it's something parents can just "do" for a kid without jumping through an insane amount of hoops - def not. thanks & respect. our common purpose is to fight a fascist, orange man-child :) so let's work together
I wrote a paper on this for grad school :) maybe lots of people that are against gender related care for minors are thinking of permanent changes. I interviewed local trans parents who all said they'd want their child to receive therapy and hormone blockers, nothing permanent until the kid's older.
Minors don't receive surgery even in states without a ban unless they go to counseling for a prolonged period of time and have the express consent of the parents. I'm talking about seeing a therapist/taking medications to delay puberty so they can make a decision about hormones when they are older

Oddly enough, the most common gender affirming surgery done on young people is a breast reduction on cisgender boys who have excess breast tissue.
