Funny story from a freelance writer.
I wrote a 99-page sci-fi article for a magazine. 350,000 characters is the equivalent of a small book.
It was published in April. After asking a dozen times to be paid, I finally received a check today. A third of the expected amount.

These people know they can treat freelancers like shit because they're not salaried.
If possible, seek a lawyer
Why people are like this?
There were rare scams before, but now it seems that almost everyone we deal with is likely scamming, just to different degrees.
I'd like a Star Trek utopia please
The odd time I’ve worked with publishers that haven’t paid in a timely manner, I remind them that they do not have any usage rights until they pay.
It’s worked for me.
It is however the end of that working relationship!
“We'll talk to the publisher about it tomorrow”.
But I've also been told “we'll pay at the end of the month” every month since April.
So.
