Watched this with the kid two years ago. She knew nothing about it. She was curious, then kind of bored, then completely gob smacked by the ending. Like, yelling at the TV. Some things will always resonate.

I was glad my sons loved it too. We watched almost everything, the first three then the modern trilogy.

It resonated with them, and even at 12 and 9, they themselves drew parallels with climate change and current wars. But they also like the mood, the adventures...

The "Statue" was really a space ship in disguise that was meant to rescue the crew. Charlton Heston was upset because it crashed, blowing it up. Unfortunately, the scenes referencing this were lost.
